Reyes rested her head against the back of her seat, more than a little relieved to be leaving Democrat Hot Springs. A rustle and a groan of discomfort drew her attention to the occupants of the back of the helicopter. Scully's arms held the newborn even through her body's obvious signs of pain left over from labor. Reyes watched as Mulder pulled the two even closer, protectively, like they were the most precious things in the world to him. She couldn't help the wave of love she felt looking at this group: the battered heroes and their shot at happiness. They deserved this... what they'd been through over the past 8 years.... "We're approaching the hospital," the pilot shouted at them over the noise of the helicopter. Mulder whispered something to Scully and she gave him a weak smile in return. As unbidden as the love of a moment ago, Reyes felt a stab of envy watching the pair. They're lucky. *** Mulder pulled back slightly from the kiss he had just lovingly placed on Scully's lips because their child was starting to squirm between them. "You know, if I had thought that I would have to wait 8 months to do that again the last time..." he teased. Scully rolled her eyes but the smile never slipped off her face. They both looked back to the baby in his father's arms and tried to soak up every last detail of his little face. As they stood there Mulder couldn't imagine two people being happier to be parents. "Mulder, I don't think we can stay like this forever." He looked up a little concerned by her meaning, which caused a little giggle to escape her lips. "I just mean that our little miracle here has an audience with his grandmother in half an hour and I have to get him ready." "Need my help?" "Always." *** Doggett and Reyes walked away from Kersh's office as fast as they could without betraying their cool exteriors. Once they reached the elevator Reyes finally broached the subject she'd been trying to approach since they had started down this road. "John, you know I will help you fight this but taking on the Deputy Director... this could be the final nail in your coffin career-wise." "Are you telling me to drop it?" "I don't want to see you lose everything!" "I almost did!" Reyes was sure she looked confused but didn't think she was going to get an answer. Doggett closed his eyes leaned against the wall of the elevator and when he continued his voice was just above a whisper. "What he did... the information he gave them... lead them straight to-" "Dana," she filled in for him, letting her suspicion slip out of her mouth unchecked but now he was the one to look confused. "Well yes and her baby but I meant-" He seemed to realize what he was saying however and looked much relieved when the elevator door chimed open, letting them into the basement. *** "He's so adorable, Dana!" Scully's mother exclaimed as she took the baby boy from her arms. Mrs. Scully began to coo in only a way a doting grandma could pull off. "What did you name him?" Scully smiled at Mulder before answering her mother. "William, after his grandfathers." Mrs. Scully didn't look at all surprised. "Fox, I didn't know your father's name was William as well," but that was her only comment. They visited for about an hour, taking turns holding the baby. It was so... normal. *** "What did you mean?" Reyes asked as she followed Doggett to the office. "Drop it, Monica." She gave him a look that clearly said that wasn't going to happen. "You know going by a process of elimination I could assume a lot from what you told me." She crossed her arms over her chest and he looked defeated. "Unless you want to tell me I'm wrong and explain it to me." He didn't say anything but started trying to look busy. "All you have to do is tell me I'm wrong." "And if your not?" he asked, giving up all pretense of working. And just like that the X-files office claimed another pair of partners. The End
